On the way up to Verdi Peak.
Verdi Peak is situated in Sierra County (California), in Lake Tahoe-Toiyabe National Forest. The hikes around the peak are both on the Californian and the Nevada side. There’s an excellent view over the city of Reno (NV) from the summit. There’s also an awesome view over the Stampede Reservoir (Lake Tahoe, CA.) The view of Stampede, (and later Boca) reservoir gets a lot better if you take a short walk on the Californian side. There are some rocky 4×4 roads that you can follow, if you feel uncomfortable walking in the wilderness.
View over the 80, from Reno to Truckee.
We reached the top around 7pm. This is the view over Reno from Verdi Peak.
Lookout tower at the top. Towers usually used to spot forest fires. This one doesn’t seem to be in use.
Lake Tahoe and Toiyabe National Forest offer some incredible, forested landscape. As well as very steep, rocky summits. There are some meadows in the area, and the wildlife is rich. We saw plenty of deer, rabbits, chipmunks and signs that we had a visit from a bear (bear scat) near our camp.
View over Reno 7.45 Saturday Night.
My awesome rescue dog Whitey.
It was me, my husband Phil, our daughter Hayley, my dog Whitey and my husbands dog Stella. We did not bring a tent, we slept in our sleeping bags under the stars. My weather app on my iPhone said that it was 23 degrees Fahrenheit during the night. It didn’t feel like it was that cold. In fact I didn’t freeze at all, neither did anyone else in my family. We did have good sleeping bags for colder weather from Coleman.
A good sleeping bag can be the difference between a positive experience and a nightmare, while camping in cold weather. This is my sleeping bag from Coleman http://www.coleman.com/Products/9000.
Hayley (14 moths) slept in my sleeping bag the first half of the night and with her dad the second half. My dog Whitey had a sweater and a jacket on to keep warm, while sleeping on my legs. I woke up after a few hours and my legs were numb…He only weights around 75-80lbs.. Stella, my husbands dog doesn’t need any clothes, but she loves sleeping close to my husband. That dog totally adores him.
The whole family watched the stars for a couple hours before we fell asleep. I love sharing this kind of adventure with my family. I hope we’ll do it soon again!
Tomorrow there will be more photos from our camp, and the hike we did the next day (Sunday.)
I hope you had a wonderful weekend and feel ready for an awesome week!
